PARTHENON SYMPOSIUM | Philosophically Bound Together: African American and White Women and the Right of the Franchise

FINAL - Linda Wynn Symposium graphic 1080x1080.png

Join the Parthenon, in partnership with Centennial Park Conservancy, on Thursday, October 29 at 6 PM for a free virtual symposium by Dr. Linda Wynn titled, Philosophically Bound Together: African American and White Women and the Right of the Franchise. This virtual symposium is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

In this presentation, Professor Linda Wynn will discuss how African American and white Women in Nashville were philosophically bound together in their attempt to gain the vote for women. She will discuss how the National Association for Colored Women under the presidency of native Memphian Mary Church Terrell scheduled its annual meeting In Nashville for September 15-18, 1897 to correspond with the Tennessee Exposition and the opening of the Negro Building. While most African Americans supported women’s suffrage they understood that in addition to their gender, their race significantly impacted their rights and available opportunities. Significant African American women such as Juno Frankie Pierce, Dr. Mattie Coleman and others worked with white women in their effort to win the vote and what they wanted in return for their support.

Dr. Linda Wynn is the Assistant Director for State Programs at the Tennessee Historical Commission and Professor of History at Fisk University.
